What We Do

We design and analyze optimization models, build data-driven and AI-enhanced simulations, and engineer digital-twin frameworks that support robust planning and real-time decision-making under uncertainty. Our work builds on our internationally recognized expertise in planning and scheduling, operations research, and simulation modeling and analysis, and on a long track record of funded research with agencies such as NASA, NATO ACT, US Department of Education, Ground Vehicle Systems Center, and Qatar Foundation.

OptiSim Lab Mission

The OptiSim Lab advances the science and practice of optimization, simulation modeling, intelligent decision systems, and digital twins to solve complex real-world problems in logistics, transportation, manufacturing, humanitarian operations, aerospace, and national security. We strive to develop innovative models, algorithms, and AI-driven simulation and optimization tools that enhance decision-making under uncertainty and deliver measurable operational improvements across critical sectors. Our mission is grounded in rigorous research traditions at UCF’s School of Modeling, Simulation and Training, which emphasizes cutting-edge simulation, optimization, artificial intelligence, and digital-twin technologies.

Vision & Impact

The OptiSim Lab envisions becoming a leading research hub at the intersection of operations research, simulation, AI/ML, and digital-twin-driven analytics, transforming how organizations design, optimize, and manage complex systems.

1. Advancing Intelligent Decision Systems

Integrating optimization, heuristics/metaheuristics, and AI-enhanced models and simulation to address scheduling, resource allocation, and dynamic operations challenges.

2. Supporting National Priorities

Delivering innovations aligned with disaster response, homeland security, aerospace operations, and supply chain resilience; areas historically supported by NASA, DHS, NATO, the Virginia Port Authority, and other major agencies in Dr. Rabadi’s funded research portfolio.

3. Building the Next Generation of Modeling & Simulation Leaders

Training researchers and students to become experts in optimization, artificial intelligence, and digital-twin technologies. This aligns with SMST’s mission of fostering advanced simulation capabilities across robotics, AR/VR, advanced modeling, and digital twins. This is most evident by leading the development of Graduate Certificate in Digital Twins supported by the US Department of Education.

4. Driving Societal and Industrial Impact

Producing research that improves humanitarian logistics, enhances aviation and transportation efficiency, optimizes complex supply chains, and strengthens resilience in cyber-physical systems, ensuring safer, smarter, and more efficient operations across society.
